Coaching Positions I Links
One of the unique elements of the Bay State Games, which separates us from nearly all of the 35+ states across the country that run state games events, is the regional format that is used for our team sports. Most state games organizations simply hold an open event that pre existing teams can enter. At the Bay State Games, the state is divided into regions by geography and teams are selected to represent that area at the finals. While this requires a lot more work, it adds to the prestige of the event and produces many tangible benefits for the athletes and coaches involved. The key to the success of this team format is the coaches who volunteer their time to run the teams, conduct the tryouts and help recruit participants.
Bay State Games team sports require 98 head coaches in eight different sports as well as hundreds of other coaches who serve as assistant or selection committee members. The list of past Bay State Games coaches is extensive and includes many who have moved onto successful careers in coaching at the high school, college and even the professional level. As just one example, the current list of Division I men’s basketball schools with head or assistant coaches that coached in the Games includes the University of New Hampshire, Fairfield University, University of Rhode Island, Providence College, Suffolk University and the University of Lowell. Boston Celtics Assistant Coach and 18 year NBA coach Tom Thibodeau also coached at the Bay State Games early in his coaching career.
