Sanction

This is a USFS Approved Non-Qualifying sanctioned event. The 2022 Bay State Games Figure Skating competition is sanctioned by the Unites States Figure Skating Association.

An athlete must meet at least one of the following guidelines:

  • A full-time resident of Massachusetts, by June 8, 2024
  • A full-time student at an academic institution in Massachusetts.
  • A registered member of a figure skating club in Massachusetts. The club must be the athlete’s exclusive “contact” in the sport.

Any athlete that meets any of the above criteria would be classified in the competition as a participant from MASSACHUSETTS for the purpose of distribution of invitations for the 2024  State Games of America.


Any athlete that does not meet the above criteria can participate if:

  • Eligibility Rule 4:  They are a resident of Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont which do not have their own State Games organization or host a State Games Figure Skating competition.
  • Any athlete that participates under eligibility rule 4 would be classified in the competition as a participant from their state of residence for the purpose of distribution of invitations for the 2024 State Games of America.

Athletes who are Massachusetts residents, full-time students in MA, or a member of a MA skating club will be classified as a participant from Massachusetts for the purpose of distribution of invitations for the State Games of America.

All competitors must be a minimum of age 5 (five) by June 17, 2023 to be eligible.


Singles free skate events (well-balanced program) have the following requirements:

  • Juvenile Girls-12 years or younger, Boys- 13 years or younger
  • Open Juvenile: Girls-13 years or older, Boys-14 years or older
  • Intermediate must be under the age of 18
  • Adults must be 21 years or older

Age classes for Adult Free Skate 

  • Young Adult – 18 years through 20 years 
  • Class I – 21 years through 35 years 
  • Class II – 36 years through 45 years 
  • Class III – 46 years through 55 
  • Class IV-56 years through 65 years 
  • Class V-6 years and older

All adult age classes may be combined depending on the number of entries and at the discretion of the chief referee. Men & ladies will be combined in Adult 1 through Adult Bronze free skate events. Men’s and Ladies will not be combined in adult silver and higher free skate events. Athletes in adult silver and higher free skate events with no competitor of the same gender in another age class will be offered the opportunity to skate an exhibition for first place, skate up to the next higher level or be issued a refund. The chief referee reserves the right to request proof of age.

All events are SINGLES ONLY. No pairs or team events.


ELEMENT & TIME REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL EVENTS WILL FOLLOW THE CURRENT USFS RULEBOOK


Bay State Games will offer the Excel (Restricted) free skate program and the Well Balanced (Unrestricted) free skate program. Event options, are as follows:

  • Excel Freeskate Beginner - Pre Juvenile: 6.0 Judged
  • Excel Freeskate Juvenile - Senior: Athletes can choose Excel or Excel Plus but, may only compete in ONE. IJS Judged.
  • Well Balanced Short Program Juvenile - Senior: IJS Judged.
  • Well Balanced Freeskate No Test - Pre Preliminary: 6.0 Judged. 
  • Well Balanced Freeskate-Preliminary - Senior: IJS Judged
  • Adult Freeskate Pre Bronze-Masters: IJS Judged 
  • Adult Freeskate Beginner - High Beginner: 6.0 Judged

Compete USA

  • Snowplow Sam-Basic 6 Program w/ Music 
  • Pre-Free Skate – Free Skate 1-6 Program w/ Music
  • Snowplow Sam – Basic 6 Elements 
  • Pre-Free Skate – Free Skate 1-6 Compulsory Moves
  • Excel Compulsory Moves 

Competition level is the highest test passed as of the entry deadline in the discipline the skater is entering. For the 2022-2023 competition season, athletes may skate up one level above that for which they qualify. Skaters cannot enter well-balanced and Excel divisions in the same event.

Athletes must list their coaches name and email address on their application. YOU MUST LIST THE COACHES NAME AS HE OR SHE IS REGISTERED WITH USFSA. Please check for maiden or married names and verify the correct name with your coach before submitting your application.

2024 State Games of America

The 2023 Bay State Games Figure Skating competition serves as a qualifier for the 2024 State Games of America. All medalists (gold, silver, and bronze) in this event will qualify for the 2024 State Games of America in San Diego, CA.


The 2024 State Games of America will be hosted by the California State Games.
