2021 Softball Showcase Recap

Softball Showcase took place Tuesday, July 13 - Thursday, July 15 at Willard Field in Devens.

Game 1
Southeast – 9
Coastal – 2
Both Southeast and Coastal’s pitchers threw three scoreless innings. Before giving up a run in the fourth inning, Coastal’s Madeline Hornung struck out five batters, and Southeast’s Amaya Santimore struck out four batters, respectively. The game opened up in the sixth when Southeast’s Taylor Dolan lead off the inning with a triple. Southeast plated three in the sixth and five in the seventh to cruise to a 9-2 win over Coastal.
Game 2
Metro – 6
Northeast – 8
Metro opened the event plating two runs in the top of the first inning, thanks to hits from Gricelda Castro and Madison Wong. Northeast responded with a run in the bottom half of the first. Metro followed the first inning performance with another strong second inning by plating three more runs. With a 5-1 Metro advantage, it seemed like the yellow team would run away with the game. This was not the case, as Northeast dominated the rest of the game, outscoring Metro 7-1 in the final three innings. Kylie Anthony sent a shot to left-center to hit the two game-winning runs in the fifth inning. The game ended in six innings due to the time limit with a score of 8-6, Northeast.
Game 3
Central – 9
Southeast – 11
Both teams started the game with a bang, plating four runs apiece in the first inning. Central started the first inning with four singles in a row before recording their first out. Southeast put their first five-out-of six runners on base before recording their first out as well. Central responded with two runs thanks to a Camden Heenan triple. Southeast responded in the third with two runs thanks to Julia Friday’s clutch solo home run. Southeast scored five runs in the fourth inning to make it an 11-6 game. Central made a respectable comeback, plating three runs in the fifth inning, but the game ended early due to the time limit. Central’s Deirdre Leahy finished the game 3-4 with three runs scored, and Southeast’s Julia Friday was 2-3 with a home run, 2 RBI.
Game 4
West – 14
Metro – 4
West wasted no time in the first inning, as the first seven batters reached base and scored. Metro scored two runs in the second and two in fourth but was not enough as West cruised on to a 14-4 win. West’s pitching tandem Sarah Ross and Hailey Wodecki kept the Metro bats at bay, striking out eight batters in only five innings of work.
Game 5
Coastal – 4
Central – 5
Coastal had control of most of the game, plating a run in the first, third and fourth innings. Central responded with a run in the fourth, making it a 3-1 game. Coastal plated a run in the sixth inning for insurance, making it a 4-1 game. Central made a roaring comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring four runs thanks to four singles in a row. The game ended early due to the time limit, and Central won the game 5-4.
Game 6
Northeast – 1
West – 9
West plated four runs in the first three innings of the game and cruised to a 9-1 victory over Northeast. Hannah Wodecki led the West offense, going 4-4 with a triple, 4 RBI and two runs scored. Sarah Hough was 2-2 with two doubles as well. Isabel Putnam led the Northeast offense going 2-3 with a pair of singles.
Wednesday, July 14
Game 7
Northeast – 5
Coastal – 10
Northeast started the second day, scoring two runs in the first inning and shutting down the Coastal offense. The game did not trend in Northeast’s favor for long as Coastal scored 10 runs in the last three innings of the game to cruise to a 10-5 victory. Northeast’s Isabella Fernald led the way going 3-3 with a double and a home run.
Game 8
Metro – 14
Southeast – 4
Both pitchers kept the opposing team’s bats at bay as Southeast and Metro failed to score in the first two innings. Metro broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third by scoring four runs thanks to Madi Wong’s clutch RBI double. Maya Tuozzolo homered in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Metro cruised to a 14-4 victory as Northeast’s bats failed to hang with Metro’s.
Game 9
Central – 5
Metro – 3
Central and Metro’s offense flailed in the first with both teams going down in order. Central opened the game up in the second inning after an Ashley Parker two-run-homerun. Metro responded in the third inning after Sophia Hazarika’s RBI double. Hazarika scored after a safety squeeze, making it a 2-2 tie at the end of the third. Central scored two in the fourth and shut the door on Metro to win 5-3 in five innings. The game ended early due to the time limit.
Game 10
West – 19
Southeast – 0
Hannah Wodecki hit a three-run homerun in the top of the first inning to give West an early 3-0 lead. Southeast struggled to generate any offense as West’s Sarah Ross did not give up a single run through five innings of work. West scored 11 runs in the sixth inning and went on to win 19-0.
Game 11
Central – 9
Northeast – 4
Central put the game away early after a five-run first inning. Grace Jones hit a grand slam to put Central up 4-0 early. From there, Central added five more runs and scattered four runs across six innings to win 9-4.
Game 12
Coastal – 0
West – 11
West continued their hot streak as they strung five hits in a row to score six runs in the first inning. Coastal had no response as West tacked on five more runs on and cruised to an 11-0 victory. West’s Hannah Wodecki went 2-3 with a double and two runs scored. West’s Rebecca Littlehale pitched a one-hit shutout to earn the victory.
Thursday, July 15
Game 13
Metro – 2
Coastal – 10
Coastal started the game quickly and never looked back. Coastal retired the first three batters in order, then scored seven runs in the first inning to put them ahead 7-0. Coastal held Metro scoreless until the fourth inning; nevertheless, it was not enough, as Coastal cruised to a 10-2 victory in six innings.
Game 14
West – 11
Central – 1
West dominated through the first two days, and day 3 was no exception. West’s Katelyn Baker set the tone with a leadoff double. Baker would later score after a Maggie Rubeck RBI single. Central responded with one run in the first inning but failed to score after that. West scored ten more runs through six innings and cruised to an 11-1 victory over Central.
Game 15
Northeast – 3
Southeast – 9
Southeast scored four runs in the first two innings and cruised for the rest of the game. Northeast struggled to keep up with the Southeast’ hot bats while only managing three runs. Southeast tacked on five runs in the last two innings of the game to win 9-3.
Bronze Medal Game
Central – 4
Coastal – 14
The BSG Softball Showcase bronze medal game featured #4 Coastal taking on #3 Central. Coastal started the game with a bang after scoring four runs in the first inning. The girls in green scored three more runs in the second inning to make it a 7-0 Coastal advantage. Central responded with three runs in the third inning, but it was not enough as Coastal cruised to a 14-4 win a bronze medal finish. Coastal’s Marissa Durette lead the way, going 3-4 with two doubles and three runs scored.
Gold Medal Game
Southeast – 1
West – 11
The BSG Softball Showcase gold medal game featured #2 Southeast versus #1 West. West dominated the entire event thus far, beating almost every team by double digits. Southeast knew they had to score lots of runs to compete. Southeast started the game aggressively, scratching one run in the top of the first inning after a sacrifice fly. That is all they would get as sisters Sarah and Lauren Ross no-hit Southeast for the rest of the game. West managed 11 runs across five innings to win the gold in mercy-rule fashion.

The Bay State Games has selected six statewide scholarship recipients for the 2025 Future Leaders Scholarship Program. These student-athletes were selected from a large applicant pool after a process that included committee reviews of all applications and virtual interviews with selected applicants. These future leaders were selected based on their achievements and involvement in academics, community service, athletics, and leadership roles. The Bay State Games Future Leaders Scholarship program was established in 1989 and has since distributed nearly $400,000 in financial aid. Each of these high school seniors will receive a $1,000 scholarship for their first year of college. “Bay State Games is proud to continue the Future Leaders Scholarship program which since 1989 has provided over $400,000 in aid to support the continuing education of outstanding young leaders." said Kevin Cummings, Executive Director of the Bay State Games. “These well deserving student-athletes have excelled in the classroom, on the field and in the community, representing a variety of schools, sports and regions across Massachusetts” This year’s six scholarship recipients are Elyse Bissada, Brooke Blahut, Abigail Howie, Olivia Laaper, Sabina Mackechnie, Molly McIntyre. Elyse Bissada is a senior at Dover-Sherborn High School, where she is a four-year varsity field hockey and track & field athlete, as well as the team captain for both sports. In 2025, Elyse was a member of the Bay State Games Southeast field hockey team where she won a gold medal. Elyse is the founder of the Veterinary Medicine Club at her school and in her free time volunteers at local farms and Animal Rescue Leagues across the state. Elyse has committed to play field hockey and study biology at Hamilton College, where she plans to pursue veterinary medicine and ultimately establish an affordable low-cost clinic that serves her community. Brooke Blahut is a senior at North Quincy High School where she is a 4-year varsity member of the soccer team, and captain of the varsity ice hockey team. Brooke is also a well accomplished figure skater. She began skating at age 2 at Winterland Skating School and is now a U.S. Figure Skating Gold Medalist. Brooke has participated in Bay State Games annually since 2016, medaled 6 times, and is a 4-year Bay State Games High School Ambassador. Brooke is also the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Ambassador for NQHS. Brooke is Vice President of her class, a member of the National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society and academically ranks in the top 5% of her class with a 4.6 GPA. Brooke is a two-time team leader and participant in the FBI Teen Leadership Academy and plans to pursue her master’s in forensic science and criminology and become an FBI Special Agent. Abigail Howie is a senior at Wilmington High School, where she is on the varsity soccer team and is captain of the Winter and Spring Track teams. Abigail serves as President of Student Council and the Wildcat Service Council, where she founded the “Bridging Generations” community initiative. She is a member of the National Honor Society, DECA, and Best Buddies. Abigail coaches a Wilmington fourth-grade team and is a USSF-certified soccer referee. She has most recently created an Alzheimer's Awareness community service project for her senior year. She hopes to continue her athletic career in college while studying sports management and marketing. Olivia Laaper resides in Stow and is a senior at Fusion Academy in Burlington. Laaper has been a captain of multiple high school sports teams including Track & Field and Swimming. Olivia is captain of her archery team at Riverside Archers and has won multiple medals in archery at Bay State Games and state competitions. Beyond athletics, Olivia has gained hands-on experience in emergency medicine as a high school intern with Pro EMS and plans to take her EMT certification this fall. She gives back to her community by lifeguarding and coaching youth swimming at Goldfish Swim School, volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters and at local food banks. In college, Olivia plans to pursue a degree in nursing with a minor in emergency medicine and psychology. Sabina Mackechnie is a senior at East Longmeadow High School where she is a three sport athlete and captain in Soccer, Basketball and Lacrosse. She has earned all-league and second-team All-Western Mass honors in soccer and lacrosse. Sabina has been a By State Games Ambassador for two years and is a member of her school's Athletic Leadership Council and Pink Ribbon Club. Sabina participates in canned food drives and fundraisers for her school sports teams. Sabina will continue her lacrosse career at Springfield College while pursuing a degree in Education. Molly McIntyre is a senior at Norton High School where she is a three-sport captain in cross country, basketball, and outdoor track, earning multiple TVL All-Star honors, and MVP awards. Molly serves in key leadership roles on Student Council, DECA, Best Buddies, and five National Honor Societies. She volunteers at local youth sports programs, community events, and the MSG Gregory Trent Foundation. Molly works part-time at a donut shop and local ice cream store.
