On Wednesday night, Freeman Alfano was awarded the Kristian Rose Memorial Scholarship at the 2021 McCormack Department of Sport Management Virtual Awards Banquet.
Freeman was selected as a 2020 Summer Games intern, however when the Games were cancelled due to COVID, Freeman took on a virtual internship project to create and host the first ever official Bay State Games podcast, Bay State Beat.
Freeman, who is a native of Hopkinton, will be graduating from UMass Amherst this spring with a degree in sport management and sports journalism. In the summer of 2019, Freeman completed a communications internship for the Valley Blue Sox. At UMass, Freeman works as a communications intern for the school’s athletics department and is a blog writer and podcast host for The Militia, the school’s official student sports fan organization. Freeman is also a percussionist in the UMass Concert Band and Hopkinton Community Summer Band.
The Kristian Rose Memorial Scholarship was established by Bay State Games and UMass Amherst in memory of Kristian Rose, who was tragically killed in an auto accident during his Bay State Games internship. This scholarship is open to Sport Management students at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, with preference given to students with community service experience, and financial need.
