Friday, July 7
Game 1: 10:00 am - Rink 1

Metro: 0

Northeast: 5

To kick off the 2023 Bay State Games Girls Ice Hockey Showcase, we began with a matchup of two teams that would come to meet each other yet again later on in the tournament. We saw a great showing by a strong Northeast team as the Metro squad proved that this was a fluke warm-up game for them. Avalina Coffey (Winthrop, Winthrop HS) opened up scoring for the Northeast squad, followed by a score by Talia Martucci (Winthrop, Winthrop HS) - both goals served up with an assist by Ava Buckley (Peabody, Peabody Vet Mem HS). Forwards Tia Picardi (Saugus, St. Mary’s HS), Lucia LaFauci (Middleton, Pingree School), and Alexa Pepper (North Reading, North Reading HS) combined to notch the last three genos for Northeast.

Game 2: 10:00 am - Rink 3

Central/West: 1

Southeast/Coastal: 2

Despite being the smallest team in the tournament, Central/West packed their punch with their first game. Southeast/Coastal kicked off scoring for this game as Maria Cantino (Prembroke, Pembroke HS) put the puck away in the first period and was followed by a goal by incoming junior Chloe Bryda (Cumberland, RI, Bishop Feehan HS). Central/West kept the game close with a score by McKenna Zamboni (Pittsfield, Pittsfield HS) in the final period of play but fell to Southeast/Coastal 2-1.

Game 3: 2:30pm - Rink 1

Metro: 4

Central/West: 4

Metro and Central/West competed tooth and nail to record the only tie of the 2023 Bay State Games Girls Ice Hockey Showcase. Defenseman Katherine Pusik (Belmont, Belmont HS) of Metro scored unassisted for the first game of the match. The next goal would come from opposing D-man, Jane Pelletier (East Longmeadow, East Longmeadow HS) of Central/West, at nearly the same minute mark of Metro’s first goal. The next three would all come from incoming sophomore Kaili Dawson (Shirley, The Winchendon School) to put Central/West seemingly out of reach with her hattrick, her team now up 4-1. Alyssa Jankowski (Medford, Malden Catholic) fueled her team with her two goals in the third period and the comeback was solidified with a snipe from defenseman Ava Baker (North Reading, Malden Catholic HS) with 2:26 left in the game, resulting in a 4-4 tie.

Saturday, July 8
Game 4: 9:00am - Rink 1

Central/West: 2

Northeast: 7

Northeast came in ready to play on Saturday, beating Central/Westl 7-2 during this game. Central/West attacked first as Moira O’Brien snuck in an unassisted goal. To follow, Northeast added five points to their name, the last of that bunch scored on a power play by defenseman Tegan Pereira (Winthrop, Winthrop HS). Central/West responded with a goal fired off by Carissima Heinis (Leominster, Leominster HS), but Northeast tallied two more power play genos in the end, shot by Tia Picardi (Saugus, St. Mary’s HS) and Alexa Pepper (North Reading, North Reading HS) respectively.

Game 5: 9:00am - Rink 2

Metro: 7

Southeast/Coastal: 1

After a loss and a tie, Metro leveled up to find their first victory against Southeast/Coastal. Thea Monovich (Belmont, Belmont HS) opened up scoring with the first two goals for the Metro squad, followed by two goals from Alyssa Jankowski (Medford, Malden Catholic). Defensemen Ava Baker (North Reading, Malden Catholic) and Katherine Pisuk (Belmont, Belmont HS) played tic-tac-toe, each scoring two goals in the second period. The game finished at a score of 7-1.

Game 6: 1:30 pm - Rink 1

Northeast: 7

Southeast/Coastal: 0

Northeast capped off their win streak in pool play with a 7-0 victory over Southeast/Costal. Tia Picardi (Saugus, St. Mary’s) had herself a hattrick and Talia Martucci (Winthrop, Winthrop HS) notched two goals to lead the Northeast squad to the Gold Game played against Metro on Sunday.

Sunday, July 9
Bronze Medal Game: 11:00am - Rink 1

(#4) Central/West: 4

(#3) Southeast/Coastal: 5

Central/West and Southeast/Coastal battled until the end, but Southeast/Coastal built momentum to push themselves over the hump to claim Bronze between the end of the first period and throughout the second. Despite their loss, incoming sophomore Kaili Dawson (Shirley, The Winchendon School) had herself a game for Central/Westas she was letting the puck go for all four of Central/West's points. Her and her Central/West team fought hard in what made for a great game, but fell to the hands of Chloe Bryda’s hattrick (Cumberland, RI, Bishop Feehan HS) and Eleni Spack’s goal and assist (Peabody, Peabody Vet Mem HS) for Southeast/Coastal.

Gold Medal Game: 1:00pm - Rink 1

(#2) Metro: 1

(#1) Northeast: 3

Metro and Northeast faced each other for what made out to be a hard-fought, back-and-forth Gold Medal game. Alexa Pepper (North Reading, North Reading HS) started Northeast off hot with a goal, assisted by forward Penny Levine-Stein (Salem, Essex Agricultural & Technical HS). Talia Martucci (Winthrop, Winthrop HS) scored two, the last of the two led off by a pass from Ava Buckley (Peabody, Peabody Vet Mem HS). Metro scored in the second period with a goal fired by Ava Baker (North Reading, Malden Catholic HS), assisted by defensive partner Gianna Holland (Malden, Malden Catholic). Northeast claimed Gold after a star performance and Metro earned Silver along with the 2023 Bay State Games Girls Ice Hockey Showcase Sportsmanship Award for displaying exemplary sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
