Week 10 calls for recalling the 10th Bay State Summer Games - 1991.
The 1991 Summer Games were held July 18-21 in Cambridge. Host venues included Harvard or MIT, and even Memorial Drive (see week 8 post).
On the 10 year anniversary, the founder and first Executive Director of Bay State Games Doug Arnot said, "on the one hand, it's hard to believe it's been ten years. Yet, when I look back it's remarkable to see how far the Games have come, and to think of the thousands of kids, volunteers, sponsors, and so many others who have become part of the Games. It is only when I think of everyone who has helped [...] that the impact of the past ten years really hits me. (Source: TORCH '91, official yearbook of the Bay State Games).
The 1991 sports lineup included baseball, basketball, cycling, diving, fencing, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, shooting, soccer, table tennis, track & field, volleyball, and wrestling. Baseball, which was in its second year was highlighted by former Red Sox pitcher, Roger Clemens, serving as honorary captain.
Like the Games today, the event was put on with a small staff (4 people) and over 1,000 volunteers.
Who would have thought that 30 years later, our sports lineup has doubled? Sports have come and gone, but Bay State Games remains.
