BSG 40 - BSG No-No
Sunday, July 18, 1993 was a historic day for Bay State Games.
This was the date the first no-hitter was thrown at the BSG Baseball Showcase. In its first 4 years of the showcase, no one had accomplished the feat, but in the game of Metro vs. Coastal in the 1993 tournament, Revere native, Mike Spinelli tossed the historic game.
In the game, no player got further than first. Two players were walked and were each picked off at first. The sophomore southpaw faced the game minimum 21 batters and struck out 14 of them to complete an outstanding outing.
On top of throwing a gem, Spinelli hit .400 (6 for 15) throughout the tournament. Steller play on the mound and at the plate helped the Metro team to the bronze medal that year.
The local baseball star was eventually drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 4th round of the 1995 MLB draft, spending four years in the minors before his career ended due to injury.
Believe it or not, we still have the newspaper clipping that covered the game...Check back every Thursday for more throwback content.
