We just learned we'll be able to return to the Berkshires for the first time in 3 years to host the Winter Games. To celebrate, let's take a look back to the 1998 Winter Games this week. The Winter Games were held from January 30 - February 8, 1998 in communities all around the Berkshires.
Snowboarding was at Brodie Mountain, which closed in 2002; ice hockey was at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams; cross country skiing was at Cranwell Resort & Golf Club in Lenox (now called Wyndhurst Golf & Club); alpine skiing was held at Jiminy Peak in Hancock; and figure skating was held at Williams College in Williamstown.
We dug up some photos from the handful of sports we held back then - snowboarding, alpine skiing, youth ice hockey, and cross country skiing. Of course, we also had figure skating, the Winter Games' ongoing largest sport. We lit the torch, had an athlete party (where athletes could grab an autograph from an Olympian) and had amazing (and cold) days of competition.
Check out some of our favorite shots from the 1998 Winter Games.
